Pelham Art Center is pleased to announce Beneath the Visible, an exhibition curated by Alexandra Rutsch Brock.
The exhibition explores what lies beneath what we see: the unseen processes of growth, erosion, memory, and change that shape both the natural world.
When we are among the trees—among the leaves, roots, wind, and strata—we are reminded that nature is not static, but continually forming and reforming itself.
Beneath the Visible brings together six artists who engage with nature as process, material, memory, and transformation. Their works move between surface and depth, growth and decay, presence and absence. Through varied approaches and materials, the artists consider the ways nature can function simultaneously as collaborator, metaphor, and force—shaping, transforming, and inviting us to reconsider our relationship to the world around us.
In the words of curator Alexandra Rutsch Brock, “Together, these artists ask us to slow down and look closely—to notice textures, traces, layers, and subtle shifts. Their works move between the tangible and the imagined, revealing that what we see is only part of a larger process… The artists gathered here remind us that nature is not merely something we observe. It is something we inhabit, participate in, and carry within us… Growth, decay, memory, and transformation are not separate experiences but interconnected cycles.”
