The “Memoir” shelf series is a unified sculptural presence of imagery of my life's memories. The pieces are human in scale, and the material mirrors the strength and vulnerability of the body. The cracks and warps within the tile emphasize the unseen and the fortuitous nature of life and the serendipity of the glazes enhance the unexpected.
The tiles are fired three to five times. First the drawing is created using the Mishima method, which relates directly to my printmaking experiences with etching plates. The greenware tiles are coated with wax, drawn into with a needle tool, and wiped with black slip, reminiscent of wiping an etching plate with ink. The drawing becomes one with the clay in the first firing. Subsequent firings are for the high fire glazes and the lusters. The remaining raw clay surface stained with ink washes is reminiscent of wash on paper. The tiles have become thicker, allowing me to carve deeply and add melted glass. Color and more three dimensional elements have become new additions to the work.
All are displayed on steel shelves - each tile approx 9" x 7" - each shelf 8"

Opening Reception: Sunday, June 1, 1 to 3 PM
The Crown Gallery at Metro Arts Studios
Evidence of the Unexpected, an exhibition of contemporary art in both 2D and 3D media. Participating artists include Alexandra Rutsch Brock, Petey Brown, Mark Rosenthal, and Jacqueline Shatz.
This exhibit brings together the evocative work of four artists exploring the edges of perception through ceramics and paintings. This dynamic exhibit delves into the intricacies of observation, the fleeting nature of time, and the complexity of existence. With a blend of quirky invention and emotional depth, the artists present imagined figures, surreal forms, and layered narratives that challenge reality while honoring its impermanence
