“Beneath the Visible” at Pelham Art Center

September 17, through October 25, 2026. 

curated by Alexandra Rutsch Brock, an exhibition exploring nature as a dynamic process of growth, transformation, and renewal.

The show features six artists — Jason Rohlf, Alyse Rosner, Kathy Rutsch, Denise Sfraga, Barbara Weiss, and Judith Witlin — whose works engage with the natural world not merely as image, but as material, surface, time, and change 

Through acts of rubbing, pressing, scraping, layering, compressing, and imprinting, the artists reveal the often unseen forces shaping our environment — traces of weather, growth, erosion, and decay. The works move between surface and depth, growth and decay, presence and absence, inviting viewers to slow down and notice textures, layers, and subtle shifts 

Rutsch Brock notes that the artists “ask us to slow down and look closely… revealing that what we see is only part of a larger process.” She describes nature as something people “inhabit, participate in, and carry within us,” with growth, decay, memory, and transformation forming interconnected cycles
